Les Richter question

This is not really a football question. There is an indication in Les Richter's biography that he was valedictorian of the Class of 1952 University of California at Berkeley. I think this means he graduated first in that class? He must have been very intelligent to do this as he had football, it's a top academic institution and the campus must have been bursting at the seams after World War II (GI bill etc.).

Thank you.

Here is a definition I found—
"Valedictorian is an academic title for the highest-performing student of a graduating class of an academic institution.

The valedictorian is commonly determined by a numerical formula, generally an academic institution's grade point average (GPA) system, but other methods of selection may be used or factored in such as community service or extra-curricular activity"
