This is not really a football question. There is an indication in Les Richter's biography that he was valedictorian of the Class of 1952 University of California at Berkeley. I think this means he graduated first in that class? He must have been very intelligent to do this as he had football, it's a top academic institution and the campus must have been bursting at the seams after World War II (GI bill etc.).
