The Texans basically gave the Browns a draft pick to take Osweiler off of their hands. They send a 2017 6th and a 2018 2nd plus B.O. for a 2017 4th.

Has there been a trade in the past where both teams are acknowledging that, because of his contract, the player has negative value?

The Browns are the test for the analytics crowd. So far they've produced a 1-15 season and this Osweiler trade but it's early, ha.

And with a jillion dollars in cap space, they let themselves get outbid for their best receiver.

No, they decided to try and upgrade, since there's no guarantee that Pryor will maintain the modest success he had last year--playing for a 1-15 team.
