Different Players for Kickoffs and Place kicks

Post by LeonardRachiele »

There have been come rare cases where NFL teams have used different players for kickoff and place kicks. Generally teams were just concerned about pure strength for kickoff.

1958 Pittsburgh Steelers-Gary Glick had a good strong leg suitable for kickoffs. Tom Miner handled field goals and extra points.

1960 Philadelphia Eagles-Halfback Ted Dean had kickoff duties. Those cake beater legs could drive a ball along way. Long time Eagle Bobby Walston was for field goals and extra points.

Early 1960's Cleveland Defensive End Bob Gain kicked off. Lou Groza kicked field goals and extra points. Groza was slower going downfield than Gain

1960s Green Bay Packers had Linebacker Dave Robinson kicking off. Paul Hornung and Jerry Kramer placekicked. Robinson had long powerful legs and good speed.

1970s Green Bay Packers had big running back MacArthur Lane kicking off. Chester Marcole kicked field goals and extra points.

1970s Oakland Raiders. George Jakawenko kicking off and George Blanda for field goals and extra points.

Running back Lonnie Perrin primary handled kickoff duties for Denver from 1976-1978 with Jim Turner assigned extra point and field goal attempts. While at Illinois, Perrin booted a school record 52 yard field goal against Penn State in 1972.

I seem to remember punters Jerry DePoyster and Ray Guy performing kickoffs for the Raiders back in the '70's in place of George Blanda & Errol Mann.

I think the Cowboys did this with Nick Folk and David Buehler.
