Bobby Layne-Two Minute Drill at Pittsburgh 1958

Post by LeonardRachiele »

By the time Bobby Layne arrived in Pittsburgh, his glory days were over. In week 9 at Comiskey Park, the Steelers and the Chicago Cardinals were tied at 20 with about two minutes left in the game. M.C. Reynolds had replaced Lamar McCann at quarterback and the Cardinals were on a drive. I figured Chicago would score ending Pittsburgh’s three game winning streak. Instead future Hall of Famer Jack Butler intercepted a pass at the Pittsburgh 20. On the next play, Bobby Layne threw a 78 yard touchdown pass to Jimmy Orr and Pittsburgh won 27 to 20.

This was Pittsburgh’s fourth consecutive victory. Bobby Layne went 16 for 28 for 352 yards and a touchdown. Tom Tracy caught five passes for 125 yards. Jimmy Orr caught three passes for 116 yards. Ollie Matson did his usual wrecking of the Steelers. Matson returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown; carried 24 times for 71 yards; and caught five passes for 56 yards.

Pittsburgh finished the season at 7-4-1. Chicago was 2-9-1 sharing last place with the Philadelphia Eagles.
