Hopes that 1958 was just a fluke disappeared as the Lions were only 3-8-1. The biggest explosion was the 45 to 21 victory over the Chicago Cardinals in the 11th game of the season. Right out of the locker room, the Lions jumped to a 17 to 0 lead. Tobin Rote capped a drive with on eight yard run; Jim Martin booted a field goal; and Yale Lary returned a fumble 25 yards for a touchdown. Detroit led 38 to 7 early in the fourth quarter then coasted to the 45 to 21 win. In the final quarter M.C. Reynolds threw a 36 yard touchdown pass to John David Crow; Jim Doran recovered a fumble in the Cardinals' End Zone; the final score was a 20 pass from M.C. Reynolds to the great Woodley Lewis.
Cardinals-John Roach and M.C. Reynolds completed 14 of 25 passes for 236 yards and two touchdowns. The Chicago ground game was almost negligible with only 71 yards. John David Crow caught three passes for 61 yards and a touchdown. Woodley Lewis caught six passes for 72 yards with the fourth quarter touchdown just mentioned.
Lions-Tobin Rote, Jerry Reichow, and Earl Morral completed 12 of 28 passes for 192 yards and two touchdowns. Detroit had 236 yards rushing well spread throughout the backfield. Ken Webb was in the leading carrying 16 times for 72 yards. Dave Middleton caught four passes for 97 yards and a touchdown. Jim Gibbons caught a 33 yard pass from Tobin Rote
Both Bill Stacy and Jack Patera had a pass interception for 40 combined yards in return. Detroit had 377 total yards versus 289 yards for the Cardinals.
