1998 Colts -- zero wins, just a handful of career starts

2025 Saints -- maybe depending who they may sign

1993 Seahawks. McGwire had one career win. Was Mirer’s first year and Gelbaugh had no wins.

1993 Patriots, Bledsoe rookie , Scott Zolak 2 career wins going into season , Scott Secules zero wins

1998 Chargers went into season with Leaf and Whelihan. Zero wins between them.

1989 Cowboys Walsh and Aikman rookies Babe Laufenberg 2 wins going into 1989

didn't check super carefully has to be more. Clark is doing a piece and asked if I could find some ... but has to be more

like this: going into 1999
Joe Germaine - 0 wins
Paul Justin - 3 wins
Kurt Warner - 0 wins

caveat, this was not the plan as everyone knows ... Trent Green went down in preseason and then they picked up Justin ,,, not sure
if that is part of criteria

2017 Browns: only Cody Kessler had any previous starts, and he was 0-8. Kizer rookie, Hogan no starts. Needless to say, they didn't add any wins that year either.

Interesting research, especially for teams determined to start a highly drafted rookie QB, throwing him to the wolves, at least back then. The Saints will probably not do that with Shough, as Moore is a new HC. Pickett or Flacco could be the odd man out, if the rookie QBs show something in late training camp for the Browns. So maybe one of them gets signed?

Back in 1989, I was stunned that the Cowboys didnt keep at least Danny White if not Pelluer to help mentor Aikman coming in. Then they sign Walsh, which didnt surprise me, though his arm was average at best.

Yes, there is a way for a "save" .... I am not huge into QB wins but they are not bad thing either ... people will find plenty of examples where the starter barely played or played poorly and the backup came in a rallied --- Darryl Lamonica with Bills a good example
' but to use a cliche --I think folks on don't need to throw the baby out with the bathwater.

But a backup win could be noted --- like the old Babe Ruth no hitter ... asterisk

My immediate thought was the 1978 Packers … if you don’t count Lynn Dickey, who wasn’t active that season.

I also believe that QBs who come into a game and lead a comeback win should get credit for it. Even though its easier for tracking winning percentage to starting QBs. On the other side of the coin, I dont believe a starter who gets knocked out of a game with a team lead, should get credit for a loss.

Mike Tanier did a piece on substack about the five best QBs in SF 49ers history, and he went with Young over Montana, which I didnt agree with, but can understand his thinking ... Montana played with a great defense compared to Young, which is true, yet I also feel the team responded to Montana's play better than Youngs' and the 1990 NFC championship is an example. The 49ers had a 13-9 lead when Montana got knocked out of the game. The Giants would get a FG but were still down 13-12, when Young entered. He didnt do anything wrong, but once Craig had that lost fumble, the Giants took the lead with a FG and won the game. I dont feel that loss should be on Joe, but Steve. Unlike John, I do believe in starting--or relief-- QB wins as reflection of an overrall team response. I wanted to comment on that site but havent paid for a subscription yet ... haha

Douglass wasn't acquired until the season had already started, so the Packers' quarterbacks going into the first game were Whitehurst (two career wins), Dennis Sproul (zero), and Neil Graff (zero).
