On Saturday Night October 9, the Cleveland Browns with a last minute touchdown pass from Frank Ryan to Gary Collins defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 24 to 19. This obscured fine performances from two Steelers. Dick Hoak carried 15 times for 107 yards and scored touchdowns runs of 14, 44, and four yards. Roy Jefferson had a 66 yard punt return.
The next day Pittsburghers saw the St Louis Cardinals go to DC Stadium to play the Washington Redskins. St Louis won 37 to 16. The Cardinals out rushed the Redskins 197 yards to 65. Willis Crenshaw gained 78 yards.
Cardinals passing-Charley Johnson completed 15 of 25 passes for 214 yards and a touchdown. Bobby Joe Conrad caught six passes for 121 yards and one touchdown. Sonny Randle caught three passes for 37 yards. Redskins passing-Dick Shiner completed 14 of 32 passes for 225 yards and two touchdowns. Bobby Mitchell caught eight passes for 164 yards.
After Johnson threw an 80 yard touchdown pass to Bobby Mitchell in the third quarter, the score narrowed to Cardinals 13 Redskins 10. Then St. Louis put on the squeeze. Bill Triplett and Prentiss Gaut capped touchdown drives with one yard plunges; Don Brunn returned a fumble 10 yards for a score; and Jim Bakken booted a 28 yard field. St Louis now led 37 to 10.
The Redskins got something to cheer about late in the game. Dick Shiner threw a 28 yard touchdown pass to Billy Hunter. Final St. Louis 37 Washington 16. Two biggest statistics. Washington had eight penalties for 70 yards and yielded five sacks for 24 yards.
