Drew Magary: Tom Brady's College Tape was Dog-***t

Post by 7DnBrnc53 »

Drew Magary of SFGate (formerly of Deadspin) wrote an article about watching tape of Brady's last college game:

No wonder Bobby Beathard of the Chargers wasn't high on him.

More like the ultimate click-bait, bullship article title. Never once does he say dogsh*t in the read. Glad he stuck to journalism rather than team scouting ... "But Brady is undeterred, which isnt surprising because he's already led Michigan to three other comeback victories this season. Pretty soon, HEY PRESTO! He's brought his team back from 14 down, yet again."

With 4 TDs and 0 turnovers and a come from behind victory, maybe evaluators needed to understand Brady's desire and intangibles more than just physical attributes. Charlie Weis still doesnt get enough credit for developing him.

OK. Well, Drew Magary said this in response to his great stats:
The game is over and I find myself more enchanted with Terrell than I am Brady. Orange Bowl MVP voters feel similarly, as they give Terrell the honor over Brady, who finished the game with the following stat line against the nation’s No. 2 defense: 34/46, 369 yards, 4 TDs, 0 INTs. That’s deeply impressive, and yet I have been trained by the NFL to look BEYOND the stats, especially as it applies to these prospects. So I marvel at his numbers, but they don’t make up for the holes I see in his game throughout: limited mobility, checkdown throws, and Terrell bailing him out. Brady looks like a very good college QB in this game, and not much more than that. He reminds me of Nix, which is not a compliment to either man. Both guys are old as college QBs go, both can do what they’ve been coached to do, but neither makes you go HOLY CRAP when you see them at work. I could argue that this is the game that helped Brady get drafted at all. He looks like a promising backup option, which he proved to be in 2001 when Bledsoe got hurt.

No doubt, Terrell made Brady look good and deserved MVP but one of the talents of Brady even then, was his vision and release, which helps any receiver with YAC ... his foot speed and mobility problems had to be overcome but the 6th round? Nix in his rookie year improved as well ...

Dick Rehbein scouted Brady at Michigan and told his wife he had found the next Joe Montana.

Naturally.

Joe Montana.

The person that started it all.

Before Montana was deified, I don't remember anyone deifying Bart Starr (who won five titles, but three of those don't count because they are Super Bowls, apparently ) or Terry Bradshaw (who also won four Super Bowls) on a daily basis.

Montana is the one who started this "QB Driven League" nonsense, along with the belief that QB's win by themselves, and should be deified even if their TEAM (key word: TEAM) wins multiple Super Bowls.

So, since we know that Brady was given too much credit for his TEAM's success (and, a team that cheated, mind you), he did turn out to be the next Joe Montana.

Dick Rehbein was spot on, but not exactly the way he expected to be. And, it's sad.

Its just the nature of the business. If anything is to be blamed, its television itself. Had televisions been everywhere when Otto Graham was winning championships, he would have been put on a pedestal, but when the Colts team went back-to-back in 1958 and 1959, Unitas became the first television, QB superstar. He remained that way, even when Bart Start was leading his team to five championships. The TEAM concept gave Lombardi notice but television emphasized the QB.

Even during the dead-ball era of the 70s, everybody knew who Staubach, Bradshaw, Stabler and Griese were. It helped that they all wore the same jersey number ... perfect for television

Montana benefitted from not only having a teammate who was one of the greatest defenders in Ronnie Lott, but led his team over the Cowboys, who were the kings of primetime NFL programming.
Once he approached winning his third and fourth SBs, the league wanted the dominant television QB to stay, even though Marino couldnt lead his team to championships.

Brady and Mahomes have kept the "QB Driven League" nonsense going, but what young QB or even free agent is going to beat Mahomes and the Chiefs? Does television and the league want a new champion, or continue a bullshit narrative of Mahomes catching Brady's 7 championships ?

Since its a team game, we will see if members of the champion Patriots and Chiefs make the HOF besides Brady and Mahomes.
It wont be many, if hardly any ...
