Andy Reid

Post by CSKreager »

Are we sure he is an all time great coach or is he merely riding the coattails of Mahomes?

For 20 years the guy was a generational choke artist before #15 fell into his lap

Now we act like he can do no wrong

Unitas and Namath made Weeb Ewbank a genius.

Reid, Ewbank and Belichick are great coaches because they coached, developed and trusted their great QBs leading their teams. Especially Weeb, who let both of his great throwers call their own plays, while Reid developed another winner in McNabb, who won a conference title.

Reid calls the same plays he called 20 years ago and also won with Alex Smith as well. Belichick couldnt win with another QB other than Brady but gave him the defenses and supporting cast of team oriented players to succeed with. A HC cant just ride the coattails of a player he drafted. He either develops him or not.
Paul Brown never won another playoff game without Otto Graham, yet no one questions his place on the Mt Rushmore of greatest ever, coaches.

Reid drafted Mahomes after a 12-4 season in 2016. He could have easily stuck with Alex Smith but aggressively took him when 14 other teams passed on him? Had Reid not drafted him, how far might he have fell?

I would. Trading Milt Plum for Jim Ninowski because you got in an argument with him is "How to Not Win Playoff Games for Dummies"

You beat me to it, Ralph. Plum was abysmal in the postseason. PB coached Ninowski in the '58 College All-Star Game and he shredded the Lions, so maybe that memory stuck with him. Anyway, in his early years Ninowski was still considered to have some untapped potential whereas Plum had already proven in big games against the Lions and Giants he really just wasn't up to the task.

With Paul Brown, it's not just championships (and getting a team to 10 straight championship games in a row - 10!) - it's not just that but his historical role as a coaching innovator that puts him up there.

As far as Andy Reid, we're at a time when NFL media sensationalization is high. When you couple that with the fact that he's (historically) maybe a B grade coach when the rest of the league (comparatively historically) might top out at C+ with only a few exceptions, he looks amazing compared to everyone else right now. The NFL goes through great eras and mediocre ones at all positions, including coaching, IMHO, and also in IMHO, we're in a somewhat mediocre coaching era.
