New Orleans Saints and NASA 1972-76

I was listening to a quality podcast Michael MacCambridge was on where he noted Saints owner John Mecom, Jr. hired an astronaut with zero football experience to run the Saints football operation from 1972 to 1976. I looked it up and yep, Richard Gordon was the astronaut.

I think John Mecom, Jr. is 84, so he would have been 32 then. Does anyone know what he was thinking? It sounded like Mecom just thought Gordon could learn the football part?

Thank you.
Nick

Saints website had an article about that when he died a few years ago.

How insane is it that New Orleans hasn't drafted a QB in the first round since 1971 (Manning)?
