In his second year as head coach, Buck Shaw guided the Eagles to the noted record. This was Philadelphia's first winning season in five years. The second week of the season at Franklin Field told the story. The Eagles walloped the New York Giants 49 to 21. On their way to a second straight conference championship, the Giants lost only two games all season. Details
--Norman Van Brocklin completed 14 of 22 passes for 196 yards and two touchdowns;
--In the the latter stages of the one sided affair, future great Sonny Jurgensen threw a touchdown pass; nothing is better than using the second string when possible.
--The defense was great getting five turnovers and four sacks for 46 yards.
--Defensive lineman Chuck Weber scored a touchdown by recovering a fumble.
--Tommy Mac Donald turned in a great performance scoring four touchdowns; three catching passes and an 81 yard punt return.
The Philadelphia Eagles were not great in 1959; but they were four and half games better than 1958.
