he Eagles final game at Connie Mack Stadium was nationally televised. It was on a Saturday the 12th and last week of the season with the Chicago Cardinals. Many times when two mediocre teams play fans get a more exciting game than one with two exceptional teams. This was just such a game with the lead changing seven times. The Cardinals unfortunately won 31 to 27.
Three players stood out:
--Cardinals Quarterback Lamar McHan completed 13 of 20 passes for 296 yards and three touchdowns.
--Cardinals Wide Receiver Woodley Lewis caught six passes for 163 yards. Lewis pulled in the three touchdown passes just mentioned for 42, 53, and 34 yards.
--Eagles Quarterback Bobby Thomason completed 15 of 22 passes for 282 yards and two touchdowns-seven yards to Tommy Mac Donald and 67 yards to Billy Ray Barnes.
The Eagles finished fifth at 4-8, one game better than the 3-9 Cardinals.
Beginning in 1958, the Philadelphia Eagles moved to Franklin Field. Connie Mack Stadium was easy to get to by public transportation and a good place to watch either baseball or football. However, parking was a problem, seating was limited, and getting behind a post was bad. Franklin Field had better parking, more seats, and still may be the best place to watch football in the country. Tell you why later.
