Dumbest game in AFL history

Post by Bryan »

Here is my submission, and hear me out:

*This was the 1966 season opener, so the Broncos were in good health. Its not like an end of year situation where you run out of QBs and have to put your HB in the shotgun.

*The Broncos' opponent was the Oilers, who were a last place team in 1965 with the worst defense in the AFL. The Oilers would again be a last place team with the worst defense in the AFL in 1966.

*There were no mitigating weather factors of monsoon, blizzard, wind gusts, etc.

*Its not like the Broncos were just swarmed under by a fierce Oiler pass rush...the Broncos only suffered 2 sacks in 22 drop backs. They somehow threw 20 passes for a total of -1 yards gained.

*The Oilers outgained the Broncos from scrimmage by a total of 472 yards vs. 26 yards. Most amazingly, the Oilers had 28 first downs to the Broncos' ZERO. The Broncos played an entire game without earning a first down.

Amazingly, that Broncos team exploded for 40 against that same Oilers team only 3 weeks later.

It has to be that crazy game in Boston I think, between the Texans and Patriots, where the Texans were going in for the TD in the last seconds but a fan ran out onto the field and broke up the pass play from Cotton Davidson. That fan anticipated the play better than the defense and not ONE official saw him or stopped the game. Hank Stram never knew about it until he saw the films after Davidson told him. Pro Football really has come along way since then.
