At the Liberty Bowl in Philadelphia in December of 1960, Penn State defeated Oregon 43 to 12. Dick Hoak was the Game's MVP playing at Halfback and Option Play Quarterback. The Steelers drafted Hoak and for 10 years he was their most reliable running back. Hoak could get that all important first down on third and short situations and seldom fumbled. Hoak's playing style was similar to Tom Matte of the Baltimore Colts and Dan Reeves of the Dallas Cowboys. The difference was that both Reeves and Matte played for better teams and got more attention.
Here are Dick Hoak's credentials for his 10 years-Carried the ball 1,132 times for 3,965 yards and 25 touchdowns; caught 146 passes for 1,452 yards and 8 touchdowns; on halfback option plays, Hoak completed 20 of 40 passes for 427 yards and 4 touchdowns. Dick Hoaks' best season was 1968 when he was the fourth leading rusher in the NFL with 858 yards and was in the Pro Bowl.
