Clay Matthews played 19 seasons (1978-1996) at linebacker, a total of 278 games in uniform. He played his first 16 seasons with the Cleveland Browns (1978-1993) and then three seasons with the Atlanta Falcons (1994-1996). He earned four Pro Bowl appearances in 1985 and 1987-1989. During the span of his Pro Bowl appearances (1985-1989), the Browns achieved a 49-29-1 overall record and won the AFC Central Division pennant four times. During the span of his career, Matthews was seventh in sacks (80.5) behind Hall of Fame linebackers Lawrence Taylor (133), Rickey Jackson (123), Kevin Greene (119.5), Andre Tippett (96.5), and Derrick Thomas (83.5) and also Pat Swilling (86.5). Note that sack statistics are only official since 1982. During that same span, Matthews intercepted 15 passes.

A complete linebacker who did everything but light on accolades due to the great contemporary linebackers already mentioned by RC. Pro Scout Inc thought he was worthy of the HOF

One of those guys who you watched growing up and thought, "That guy will be in the HOF someday." Clearly was thought of as being one of the best at his position at the time.

I tend to agree with GameBeforeTheMoney. I remember Clay Matthews as a rookie in 1978 and it seemed like he was a wily seasoned veteran who had been there for many moons. I remember him as playing his entire career at a high level and that he should be voted into the H of the VG.
