Trivia from People Magazine!

Post by Bryan »

Saw this tidbit in People magazine while reading an article about Danica Patrick breaking up with her most recent boyfriend....

Who was the first 40-year old player to compete in a Super Bowl?

Off the top of my head I'd say George Blanda, who was like 114 years old when the Raiders lost to the Pack in SB 2.

Good ol' George. Loved that guy. He looked just like my Uncle Johnny from Youngstown.

Correct! Who is the 2nd 40 year old to play in the Super Bowl (very obscure player)?

The guy played in 3 Super Bowls...I didn't remember him playing in the 3rd one (when he was 40 years old).

You thinking of Earl Morrall? Let's see, 1 w/ Colts and then 3 straight w/ Miami. He suited up for the last one but I don't know if he actually entered the game (maybe as a holder for placekicks?) Oh well, he got a ring and a fat paycheck regardless of whether he played.

Morrall would be my guess too.

Morrall played in 4 Super Bowls, not 3. He played in 2 with the Colts, and 2 with the Dolphins. (He was still on the Colts in 1971, when Miami made their first Super Bowl.) Morrall played in both Dolphin Super Bowl wins, holding for kicks. I remember him as the holder on "Garo's goof."
Morrall turned 40 a few months after his final Super Bowl appearance.

Mike Horan? He played in 4 Super Bowls, not 3. After playing for the Dan Reeves Broncos during their Super Bowl runs in the late 1980's, he was the punter for the 1999 Rams at age 40.
