Clarke was outstanding in the Cowboys formative years. He possessed great hands and put up some great number over a four-year span between 1961 and 1964. In that span, Clarke, playing 14-game seasons, caught 196 passes for 3,768 yards (a 19.2-yard average!) and scored 38 TDs. To give that some perspective, if they were playing 16-game seasons, Clarke's averages per year would have been 58 receptions for 1,116 yards (19.8 ave) and over 11 touchdowns.
Clarke's best season was 1962, when he caught 47 balls for 1,043 yards (22.2 ave) and 14 touchdowns. He was named All-Pro in 1964.
