Marty Schottenheimer passes away

Most probably know that he had been battling Alzheimer's for quite a while now. One of the best turnaround coaches you could get. His game plan was perhaps a little too conservative though to have great success in the postseason but a great coach to get if you needed to turn your team into a winner.

I respected him as a coach and I can't believe it's been 14 years since he last coached. I also forgot he'd played several years in the AFL.

Marty’s game plans had nothing to do with The Drive, the two fumbles and the missed field goals. He was a great coach who deserved much more playoff success than he had.

You've evidently never heard of Grzegorz Brzęczyszczykiewicz, who played tackle for the Szymankowszczyzna Killer Kielbasas. His name was so long they actually had to parcel out syllables to five teammates. True story, except for the parts I made up.

I was sorry to hear of his passing, even though it was expected after he went into hospice care. He was an outstanding coach.

I watched NFL Films Lost Treasures recently. Schottenheimer was shown in his Bills jersey.

I also remember NFL Rocks on the Edge from 1992. There was a clip of Marty speaking to a dejected Derrick Thomas. Apparently Thomas had blown an assignment or made a mistake that led to the game going to overtime. Marty was telling DT that he had to put it behind him, that KC was going to need him in the OT period and they were right back to where they started at 0-0. This was Marty at his best.

As a coach, it's not like Marty was the 2000 Washington Redskins. He had great kickers who just came up short. Nick Lowery led the NFL in FG % and was All Pro in 1990. He came up 2 feet short on a 50+ yard game winning field goal against Miami.
Pete Stoyanovich led the league in FG % with only one missed FG, and was the PFW All Pro kicker in 1997. He made a 34 yard FG early in the playoff game vs Denver. A holding penalty wiped it out and Stoyo missed the ensuing 44 yard FG. (In the 4th quarter, KC lined up for a 48 yard FG but ran a fake. Louie Aguiar was knocked out of bounds short of a first down. Those weren't game winning field goal attempts, but at the end of the game, KC was at the Denver 20, but had to go for a touchdown as time was running down.)

In 2006, Nate Kaeding hit almost 90% of his field goals and was 2nd Team All Pro. He missed a long FG that would have sent the NE playoff game into OT.

These guys weren't scrubs. Just bad luck that they came up short (literally) in some of their best seasons.

Lin Elliott went 0-3 against the Colts in 1995 and Kaeding missed a 40 yard kick in OT that would have won the 2004 game against the Jets.

On the other hand, Stoyanovich hit a 2nd quarter 58 yard FG for Miami to provide the difference in the 1990 game.
