These two questions occurred to me while I was on the road today:

1. Can you name the man who threw 5 interceptions in each of two back-to-back championship games?

2. How about the man who threw 6 interceptions in a championship game, and also threw 5 in an earlier title game. He played in one more, but threw a mere two in that one.

Here's a hint: Neither of these guys played in the last 30 years.

#1 is George Blanda. I don't know who #2 is...I had some guesses but none were correct.

#2 is Frank Filchock. The 5 interceptions came in the 73-0 1940 title game, and the 6 interceptions came in 1946, also against the Bears.

The especially interesting thing about Blanda's 5-intereception games is that the Oilers actually won the first one.

True, and he could have easily won the second one as well. I recall the phrase "the Texans somehow kept a first half mismatch from turning into a 2nd half rout"...basically every Texans possession of the 2nd half was a 3-and-out followed by a 30-yard punt, and every Oilers possession was a drive downfield with a Blanda endzone INT.

In the 1962 regular season, the Oilers had no less than five games in which they as a team threw five or more interceptions. Astoundingly, the Oilers won all five games. Their luck ran out in the title game though.
