George Allen's peak-performance as an NFL head coach as well as, let's face it, Billy Kilmer's best-ever effort with those huge vital pass plays! Correct me if wrong, but what WAS any better career-wise for either of the two?? Redskins WERE favorite to win that very SB two weeks ahead? DC had to be quite high and confident after that feat over Landry/Staubach & Co! They were going up against the very team that Dallas squashed a year prior and versus a coach who still had yet to win the 'Big One'. As an adult (instead of a 2-year-old) going into that game who already was following ball for years, I'd like to think a bet for Washington would have been not a bad call at all for yours truly.
Anyone who was around for that who thought Miami would still prevail as they actually did?

I was around then. I saw Super Bowl VII on TV. It was seen as a tossup going in. The betting line favored the Redskins by 3 points. As I remember it, the Redskins were the most publicized team during 1972, even though the Dolphins went undefeated.
After the Dolphins went up 7-0 in the first quarter, then 14-0 at halftime and could have been more. On that day, they were the better team . The Redskins had a couple of drives eating up the clock but couldn't score. Kilmer missed receivers in critical situations. The last time hitting the goalpost crossbar, which was on the goal line in 1972. The Dolphins kept Larry Brown from making big yardage.
People remember the Garo Yepremian play but from the first quarter on the Dolphins were beating the Redskins and making it look routine. The result was not a surprise to the typical football fan. Super Bowl III was a big upset. Super Bowl IV, a mild surprise that it was one-sided.
For me personally, it wasn't a surprise when the Dolphins beat the Redskins "as they actually did."
Just my opinion for what its worth. You can watch the broadcast on youtube.

Just out of curiosity why is this thread titled 1972 NFCCG discussion when the fist two posts seem to be discussing Super Bowl VII?

The individual who started the thread asked about Super Bowl VII so I answered.

Do we know for certain that that sound bite was said during that game? A lot of times they take cool sounding sound bites and attribute them to lots of different situations.

99.9% certain. Only the Cowboys could draw that extreme level of hatred out of George Allen’s Washington teams.

Well, I watched the 1972 NFC Championship highlights.
It was a very dominant performance by the Redskins defense. The Cowboys had 8 first downs for the game, 2 by penalty. None in the 1st and 3rd quarters. Never reached Redskin territory except for 2 drives in the 2nd quarter.
As far as offense goes, if the Browns and Steelers could put a couple of touchdowns each up on the Dolphins, wouldn't you think the Redskins would have at least some success?
Also watched Super Bowl VII. Redskins run defense held its own in the 1st half at least. Pass defense was awful. Fischer gets turned around on Twilley's TD catch. Warfield is completely lost on a TD that was called back. The backbreaker was Buoniconti's INT and return just before the two minute warning. A Jim Mandich catch, again not very well defensed, sets up a 14-0 halftime lead. Redskins keep it 7-0, maybe a different story in the second half.
Redskins, Ted Marchibroda I suppose, made adjustments at halftime. More misdirection. The offense looked much better, Larry Brown gets loose a couple of times. Couldn't punch it in.

The Cowboys starting QB in that NFC Championship game attempted 20 passes in the regular season. Has an NFL team started a QB in a championship game with fewer than 20 attempts?
I found this tidbit to be of Time/Life Books coincidence level...
Roger Staubach 1972 regular season stats - 9/20 98 yards 0 TDs
Roger Staubach 1972 NFC Championship game stats - 9/20 98 yards 0 TDs
