Jerome Barkum and Richard Caster

Post by Gary Najman »

I have been always confused as which of these two players (who, by the way, also were college teammates at Jackson State) was the WR and the TE for the New York Jets? I know that when Caster went to the Houston Oilers, Barkum became the starting tight end (and also Caster was the TE for the Oilers), but it appears that they switched positions quite often with the Jets. Does anyone remebers?

Both Barkum and Caster are listed as dual position players by PFR.

Barkum is listed as a Wide Receiver from '73 to '75 and at TE for the rest of his career.

Caster is listed as a WR in '71, '77 and '79 and either a TE or non-starter for the rest of his career.

I don't remember how they worked together while with the Jets so someone else will have to comment on that aspect of their overlapping careers.
Oddly enough, I remember both of them as TEs.

I always associated Caster with TE, but that is more to do with the football cards I had as a kid than anything else.
