1972 Jets

Post by BD Sullivan »

Playoff-worthy with some luck? They finished a somewhat misleading 7-7, with five of those losses coming against playoff teams that compiled a collective record of 59-10-1. The other two losses came against the 8-5-1 Lions on Thanksgiving and having the dubious "honor" of being the only team to lose to the 1-13 Oilers.

Their defensive breakdowns appear to have been the main problem: they allowed 29 points per game in the seven losses and 17 points per game in the wins. In three of the losses, they racked up total offense of 398, 394 and 404 yards.

A very good offense and a poor defense add up to a 7-7 record. Losing to the Oilers was a disgrace and they couldn't beat good teams so they were who we thought they were. ;)

that was the year of the bizarre Colts game where Namath somehow throws for nearly 500 yards on 15 completions. 6 td's.

33 yards a completion. Can this even be done on a video game? :o

It was not just that game. When you add the stats from the second Colts game things get even more amazing. Against the Colts in 1972, Namath completed 20 passes for 724 yards and eight touchdowns.

It helped that the Colts were in free-fall that year, but he did have a pair of huge games.

The Jets played two really competitive games against the undefeated Dolphins team that year. They almost beat them at the Orange Bowl, a really good back-and-forth game that ended 28-24. They would have needed 3 more wins to get to 10-4 to beat out Cleveland for the wildcard that year. They did have a tough schedule, with the NFC Champion Redskins and playoff bound Oakland Raiders on the schedule. What I remember that season for was it was Namath's last season where he played all 14 games. There was also the game against New Orleans where Bobby Howfield kicked 6 FGs for all the of the Jets points in a game that wasn't televised due to a technician's strike. Not a playoff season but an entertaining one for sure!

Actually, they were 7-5 going into their final two games (@OAK, CLE). Against the Raiders, they were only down by one in the fourth before Lamonica and TE Ray Chester connected on a 68-yard TD pass. If they win that game, they are 8-5, and they have a winner take all game at home in Week 14 against the Browns for the WC (in reality, they lost 26-10, but Namath didn't play that game).

The Browns still had a slim chance at the division title going into that final game, but after they won, the Steelers beat the 4-8-1 Chargers to set the stage for the Immaculate Reception.

TD's of 80, 79, 67 and 65 yards will do it. A 28 and 10 yarder to boot. So he averaged 55 yards per TD on 6 TD passes. Has anybody ever thrown for 329 yards in a single game on just TD passes?
