The Next Great Quarterback

Post by JuggernautJ »

Who are the best consecutive pair(s) of quarterbacks to play for the same franchise in in NFL history?

Montana --> Young
Favre --> Rogers
Waterfield --> VanBrocklin
Herber --> Isbell (--> Herber)

Layne --> Rote (probably second tier but noteworthy none-the-less)
Lamonica --> Stabler
Connerly --> Tittle (?)
Manning --> Luck? (we'll see)

I'm sure I'm missing many, many (very obvious) possibilities.
Who comes to mind for you?

Technically, there was a one year gap between Peyton and Andrew Luck.

Bledsoe > Brady is another second tier listing.

Oops. My bad. I didn't check Manning/Luck because I was sure I was correct.
TYVM for the correction and strike them from the list.

I was thinking of Bledsoe/Brady also but didn't really consider Bledsoe worthy.
But that is my prejudice and I certainly wouldn't argue with your opinion.

I was also looking at Warren Moon/??? but couldn't find a particularly worthy successor.

Luckman --> Lujak??

Edited to add: VanBrocklin --> Jurgensen
and maybe Jugensen --> Kilmer?

A trifecta for the 49ers:

Frankie Albert > Tittle > Brodie.

Only one Hall of Famer, but the other two were MVP selections in their own right.

Lamonica > Stabler >(after four games of Pastorini) Plunkett isn't too shabby either, and it took care of the Raiders quarterbacking duties for 20 years.

Cowboys: Meredith > Morton > Staubach > White (each led them to at least a Conference/League Championship game).

I like this one, but I can see why it may not count. They won titles with Dunn in '29, '30, and '31. Herbert and/or Isbell led them to title games in '36, '38, '39, '41 (lost in division tie breaker playoff game), and '44. Herbert/Isbell overlapped on the active roster like Waterfield/Van Brocklyn until Waterfield retired, but I'm not sure how/if they shared the position. Maybe someone who knows packers history can chime in on this one. I remember Ralph had the Johnny Blood quote about Dunn not getting the accolades he deserved because he didn't come into the league after being a college star like Friedman.
