Low Yardage Games, Lots of Touchdowns
Low Yardage Games, Lots of Touchdowns
A year and a half ago, I posted a thread about players that rang up the yardage, but not the touchdowns.
Now I'm going to do the opposite- guys who did not pile up the yards, but had big games in terms of getting scores.
Examples of this you recall?
I recall Thanksgiving 2004 Peyton Manning had a 6 touchdown game against Detroit but threw for only 236 yards and his longest pass completion was 25 yards.
For non-QB's? James Stewart in a Jaguars/Eagles 1997 game had 5 touchdowns, but he barely cracked 100 yards (102)

Jerome Bettis, 5 carries for 1 yard and 3 touchdowns on the 2004 season opener.
Mario Bates 4 carries for 3 yards and 3 touchdowns. 1998 Divisional Round playoff game vs Minnesota.

Re: Low Yardage Games, Lots of Touchdowns
Jerome Bettis opening day 2004 immediately comes to mind. We were on our honeymoon. I picked up a USA Today in Provo, Utah the Monday after week 1's Sunday games to see what happened the day before. As I was scanning the box scores, Jerome Bettis popped out at me. 5 carries for 1 yard, yet he scored 3 touchdowns! For a few seconds I didn't think this was mathematically possible until I realized his carries must have been 1, -1, 1, -1, 1.

I'll have to see a play-by-play to explain Evans' stat line from '83. That's one of the weirdest I've ever seen.

Here's what I know about that game:
1. Riggins didn't play
2. Joe Washington did a lot of heavy lifting (147 yards on the ground)
Re: Low Yardage Games, Lots of Touchdowns
As I recall Reggie Evans was only used in goal line plays in the 1983 game.

I have a book called "Redskins Chronicles" that has recaps of all Skins game from 1937-2008. I'll take a look and see what is written about it.Todd Pence wrote:I'll have to see a play-by-play to explain Evans' stat line from '83. That's one of the weirdest I've ever seen.

From the box score, Evans had two 2 yd TDs, and a 1 yd TD, and his longest run of the day was 5 yards. So he lost 6 yards on his other six carries.nicefellow31 wrote:I have a book called "Redskins Chronicles" that has recaps of all Skins game from 1937-2008. Similarly with Bettis' game, his longest carry was 1 yard, so aside from his three 1 yd TDs, his other carries were either -1 each, or -2 and 0.
