new quarterbacks for 2018

Post by JWL »

The 2018 draft is less than a week away

The following quarterbacks will likely be drafted to become "franchise" quarterbacks-
Sam Darnold
Baker Mayfield
Josh Allen
Josh Rosen
Lamar Jackson
Mason Rudolph

Most seem to think the Browns will draft Allen or Darnold.
The Giants might draft a quarterback.
The Jets will likely draft Baker Mayfield unless Darnold falls to them. After pick three, it gets too hard to guess.

I may actually take Mayfield over Darnold at this point. Not 100% gun to my head sure but there is something about Mayfield that appeals to me aside from the usual swagger and bravado. He maintains pinpoint accuracy even when on the move. His deep ball accuracy is just phenomenal. His arms strength is very underrated. Has a cannon. Doesn't fumble despite small hands. Processes the game very quickly at the mental level. Teammates love him

Darnold makes plenty of WOW throws can also be careless with the football. But he has great timing. Like Mayfield can stick it into tight windows. His arms strength is fine but not a cannon. Also noticed he throws quite well on the run.

Rosen is the guy whose stock seems to be falling of late. I'm not sure why or if this is just a smokescreen. Perhaps something leaked out of late that the teams know of that hasn't make it to the media yet? His mechanics are smooth and flawless, but there are some injury concerns as well as issued with his controversial views and commitment to the game long term.

Allen I think is a disaster. Great kid. Hard worker. Zero accuracy. He'll have some moments here and there but overall I think he ends up a less surly Jeff George

Jackson is kind of a wild card. Thin build but he's wiry strong. Erratic accuracy. That low wonderlic frightens me. Doesn't fear the rush. Tough kid. GREAT runner and pure athlete (Polian is no idiot he knows what he's talking about)Plays hard but I don't believe he thinks the game at that advanced a level. Will probably bounce around the league for a decade as mostly a backup

Was never overly impressed with Rudolph. No wow factor with him. No strengths that make any defense fear him all that much. I think his ceiling is Ryan Fitzpatrick

Overall I think only Rosen can be truly elite. Mayfield and Darnold can top out at very good quarterbacks

I haven't decided who I want the Jets to pick. Their selection will be made easier if two quarterbacks get chosen before it is their turn to pick. I watched all of these guys in action (although far from every game) and I still don't know who I like the most.

Highest ceiling- Josh Allen
lowest floor- Josh Allen
biggest worry about being in New York and having issues with fans and media- Baker Mayfield
seemingly the smartest off the field so he might be a horrible football player according to some people who think intelligence is bad- Josh Rosen
biggest injury risk- Lamar Jackson (very skinny legs and he runs a lot- you can almost guarantee a leg or knee injury)

I think Sam Darnold will improve his fumbling issue a bit. He has worked on that with Jordan Palmer. Is he going to be more like the least fumbling quarterback ever (whoever that is) or more like Dave Krieg or Warren Moon? Based on what we saw last year, one would probably take the latter if one had to bet.

Allen would most likely need to sit for a full season beyond some playing time in a blowout late in the year. Whenever he had pressure last season, he really lost it. Christian Hackenberg is another guy who couldn't process what was going on around him and has been a colossal failure to this point due to that. If quarterbacks could play in a tuxedo and linemen were not allowed to rush, then Hackenberg might be able to play. If Allen gets with the right team and they have patience, he could be the next Cam Newton without the flash. Or he could be the next Hackenberg.

Quite apart from thoughts about the rookie crop, it's been a rather odd offseason for QBs.

The Vikings went 12-3 behind Case Keenum after Sam Bradford got hurt in their opening victory, in which he threw for 382 yards and 3 TDs. Meanwhile, Teddy Bridgewater, their starter in 2014 and 2015, returned to the roster. Amid all the speculation about which two of the three the Vikings would keep, they let all three of them go.

Keenum signed with Denver, Bridgewater with the Jets, and Bradford with the Cardinals. Meanwhile, the Vikings signed Kirk Cousins, who had been the first QB in history to be franchise-tagged in two straight seasons and had started 48 straight games for the Redskins before becoming a free agent.

The Redskins replaced Cousins with Alex Smith, whom they acquired in a trade with the Chiefs. Only Tom Brady and Russell Wilson won more games than Smith as a starting QB during his tenure in Kansas City.

The Browns drafted DeShone Kizer last year and made him their starter. But they gave up on him and traded him to the Packers, where he'll obviously be a backup. Meanwhile, the Browns also acquired Tyrod Taylor in a trade with Buffalo, where Taylor had been the starter for three years.

Can anyone remember an off-season in which so many QBs changed teams?

1994.

Warren Moon left Houston for Minnesota.
Jeff George left Indy for Atlanta.
Jim Everett left the Rams for New Orleans.
Dave Brown took over for Phil Simms with the Giants.
Chris Miller left Atlanta for the Rams.
Jeff Blake went to Cincinnati from wherever, taking over from David Klingler.
Washington drafted Heath Shuler to take over from Mark Rypien.
Jim Harbaugh left Chicago for Indianapolis.
Steve Walsh left the Saints to start in Chicago.
Scott Mitchell left the Dolphins to start in Detroit.
Billy Joe Tolliver left Atlanta to start in Houston.

So that's eleven new starters, ten coming from new teams, in a 28 team league.

I just can't believe we got Darnold. A rare stroke of good luck. We had written Darnold off he was gone. We wanted Mayfield...gone. Giants were taking Darnold so forget that. Nope he slips to us. Very grateful. Rosen I started to have doubts about as it was rumored he was about to slip due to some intel that scared teams away. Still would've been pretty satisfied with him but I could see him clashing with coaches and the press (and teammates)

Something changed late in Cleveland. Dorsey says he knew for 6 weeks it was Mayfield...but he only tells Hue Jackson the week of the draft? That's ridiculous. And what agent would have Sam Darnold wear a brown tie to the draft and autograph Browns helmets earlier if it wasn't locked down that they were taking him. There have been rumors that there was infighting between three factions in the Browns org regarding Darnold/Allen/Mayfield and the Mayfield camp won out. I'd bet the reason they did was because Haslam fell into that camp. Then the Browns turn around and reach for Ward.

I hope Mayfield does great in the NFL but something about this situation in Cleveland seems rotten. Jets fans had their heart set on Broadway Baker and Mayfield wanted to be a Jet very badly. Not meant to be
