Has This Happened Before?
If you've been watching tonight's game between The Chiefs & Raiders you might have seen that scuffle where Marshawn Lynch hit an official and was ejected.
First time that I can remember such a thing.

Orlando Brown knocked down a ref in 1999 (?) after the official had inadvertently thrown his flag (which was weighted) and hit Brown in the eye.MIKEBENNIDICT wrote:If you've been watching tonight's game between The Chiefs & Raiders you might have seen that scuffle where Marshawn Lynch hit an official and was ejected.

I discussed it in the other thread but I will reiterate here since I think we will discuss it here - In the case of Brown, it was in the heat of the moment because he was on the field, but Lynch wasn't involved in the play and ran in from the sideline and shoved a ref. My guess is that it's the end of Beast Mode in Oakland and he knows it, that's why he didn't stick around.

From what I can remember that really messed up Browns eye, it took years to heal.

He missed three full seasons, and sued the league for damages. He was never the same player when he returned.sheajets wrote:From what I can remember that really messed up Browns eye, it took years to heal.

Lengthy suspension and some sort of anger management. But I think they would still want to salvage him and use him later in the season.Rupert Patrick wrote:I discussed it in the other thread but I will reiterate here since I think we will discuss it here - In the case of Brown, it was in the heat of the moment because he was on the field, but Lynch wasn't involved in the play and ran in from the sideline and shoved a ref. In the famous (or, I suppose, infamous, depending on one's perspective) MNF 49ers double-comeback game against the Rams (December 11th, 1989) Charles Haley was thrown out of the game for touching a referee.
Actually, Haley knocked away the hands of a ref who was touching him but the call was made and Charles ejected.

Lynch has been a recalcitrant, self-crotch-grabbing weirdo throughout his NFL career and has somehow been indulged by the league and fans. This will just be passed off as "Lynch being Lynch". Maybe he will be suspended for a game or two. He will be fined. I will be shocked if the Raiders cut him.

Umm, this is a fairly common thing. Players being ejected for making contact with an official -- usually happens when an official is trying to break up a group of players and starts pushing one player out of the group and that player swats the official off of him. Seems like I've seen that a bunch of times. Though off the top of my head right now I'm only thinking Harrison Smith, Justin Smith, I believe Aaron Donald and DeAngelo Hall as well. Plus Taylor Lewan just last season. Sure there's more I'm forgetting and these are just recent so no, not something that never happens.
And obviously the Orlando Brown one because he specifically went at an official, though his frustration could be understood.
Regardless, not sure why the Lynch incident is being blown out of proportion like it's the most egregious violation. As soon as he made contact with the official it was obviously going to be an automatic ejection but we've all seen much worse than that. Though evidently players getting ejected for making contact with officials is something people forget about.

There was also the Travis Kelce incident of last season where he was thrown out for throwing a towel at an official.
I am not sure we have seen worse incidents as far as players grabbing officials as we saw from Lynch tonight. His action tonight seemed to be one of the more egregious player-making-contact-with-official incidents. In giving this a little more thought I think at worst he will get a one game suspension. More than likely, he will just get fined.
