Joe Montana retired at the age of 38, but was coming off a pretty good season for the Chiefs. He was top 10 in completion percentage. Only 9 interceptions in 14 starts. Had plenty of flashes of his old masterful play such as the Monday night Broncos game as well as a win over the future champ 9ers. The Chiefs were not exactly flush with dynamic receiving threats (Willie Davis, Lake Dawson were all pretty ordinary) though they did have to good receivers out of the backfield in Kimble Anders and Marcus Allen.

What if Montana decides to come back in 1995 at the age of 39? Having him over Steve Bono would've made all the difference in the world against the Colts in that 10-7 game (Bono was miserable) Would Montana be enough to get the Chiefs to the promised land though?

Montana's Chiefs contract would've expired at the conclusion of the 1995 season. Suppose he wants 1 last hurrah somewhere as a starter...where would he go?

Hearing a while back that Joe actually almost signed with the 'Burgh in '93, I couldn't help but to excitedly post a thread about it right here (despite enough "what-if"-unfriendlyness here at PFRA). Selfishly, I never thought of such a "staying in KC another year" scenario.

I'll say just one thing on this now subject...despite losing on Turkey Day two months earlier, despite possible WRs running wrong routes, despite Charley Haley & Co in his face all day - Joe Cool with KC in 1995 does not throw two passes to Larry Brown!

I don't know, maybe I'm giving Joe even more credit. Many a very good QB as Neil O was up til then could throw a pick in such situations; especially with a pass-rush in your face all day like Dallas's was. I just can't help thinking that Joe would have waited just a bit longer before making those throws. Perhaps (had he been Steelers' QB that day) spot Holliday deep and throw him the game-winning bomb.

fwiw, as the ultimate tease for the ultimate tortured franchise, Joe Montana appeared in a commercial in 1993 or 1994 to promote a video game where trading players was a new feature...and they showed him in a Jets uniform

As bad as Bono might have been in that loss to the Colts, Lin Elliott, with three missed FGs, was worse. KC still should have won that game.
