In 1978, Nick Lowery (then a rookie) replaced the injured John Smith for the New England Patriots in the 4th and 5th games of the season, then the Patriots' kicker was David Posey the rest of the season. In those two games, Lowery made all his 7 extra point attempts and missed his only field goal attempt (it was of more tan 40 yards). I have the following questions:
1) Viewing the notations my father made on the 1978 Game Plan magazine (the only available back then here in Mexico), it appeared that Lowery was known as "Dom" in his rookie season instead of Nick. Is it correct?
2) Why the Patriots kept Posey? He eventually missed half of his field goal attempts and two extra point attempts, and never played in the NFL after that.
3) Did Lowey was on a team's training camp in 1979, or he was out of football?

Re: Nick Lowery's 1978 questions
I think Lowery was short on his kickoffs with Patriots...he tried to get a tryout with the Colts that year, but didn't get one. He was with Bengals in Summer of 79Teo wrote:In 1978, Nick Lowery (then a rookie) replaced the injured John Smith for the New England Patriots in the 4th and 5th games of the season, then the Patriots' kicker was David Posey the rest of the season. and I read he was with Redskins in camp in 1979 and couldn't beat out Mosely. He had tryout with Chargers to gill in for Rolf...but Mike Wood won the tryout over Posey and Gerela and Lowery

I recently saw a then-rare SNF game (broadcasted by ABC) between the Patriots and Raiders, and Howard Cosell called him Dominic.Rupert Patrick wrote:According to Pro-Football-Reference.com, his given name is Dominic.
