Ruining the Game?
Ruining the Game?
Not the same game I grew up and fell in love with as a child.
Shortening the OT to 10 minutes
http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap300000 ... 10-minutes
And to make matters worse, the NFL is relaxing Touchdown celebration rules for players.

The past few years I have become so disillusioned with the game today. Maybe it is me, I don't know but a lot of these changes are stupid, in my opinion. I mean, if you lay a finger on a QB, you're flagged for 15 yards, you can't hit a receiver who's coming over the middle, he's defenseless they say, And now these two.

10 min OT...joke! If there must be reg-season OT in any sport, it should be exactly as long as a period of play (not fond of NHL or NBA OT either). I'd like to see NFL regular-season games go back to not having OT at all. In fact, it should have gone back to it when they installed the 2-pt conversion. The more ties, the more tie-breakers, right? Let OT (15 min) be strictly post-season, each team being allowed a possession even if first team scores a TD.

Actually... I sort of like the shorter OT. Because, like you, I think there aught to be no OT and just let regulation regular season ties end in tie games. Less OT is closer to no OT than the full 15 minutes. But I get what you're saying... why should the OT quarter be different than a regular quarter. I've said this elsewhere on this forum before... More tie games = less of a need to go through the list of tie breakers and have one 11-5 team win a division over another 11-5 team because of "net points in division games" or something goofy like that. If one is 11-5 and the other 10-5-1, we have a clear division winner.

Yes. Perfect example!'81 AFC East, anyone?

Re: Ruining the Game?
I don't mind the 15 min to 10 min reduction. OT games are rare. OT games that are not settled after 10 minutes are even rarer. It's not like we are going to get an enormous uptick in ties or something.
That is a good point though that ties would simplify late season division and wild card tiebreakers where we'd no longer have to use silly "strength of whatever..."
Due to the brutality of the game, I still prefer a sudden death OT. But that's just not feasible with how the NFL is constructed nowadays. It's just too easy to complete a quick slant, get a gift PI or roughing the passer call, and have your kicker drill a 54 yarder like it was nothing.

Yeah, there is no need for overtime in the regular season. However, whenever ties do happen there is a lot of outrage. I saw it last season on social media and from men and women talk show people on ESPN programming. They say ties are un-American and stupid and stuff. It got so ridiculous and over-the-top that I sort of hope a tie never happens again simply so I don't need to read or hear complaints anymore.74_75_78_79_ wrote:10 min OT...joke! Regarding TD dance rules, of course the limits of this will be pushed and soon with over the top and grotesque displays. What really gets to me is the lack of situational awareness. Down 28-3 in the 4th with 37 seconds to go...dance. Or when they sack the QB down 30 in the 4th and do some sort of celebration. I see this things and suddenly those single digit wonderlics don't look all that surprising.
Re: Ruining the Game?
We have already seen grotesque displays. Marshawn Lynch, if he scores a touchdown this season, will likely grab his crotch again. I don't know what he is trying to accomplish with that. Doug Baldwin, in a Super Bowl, pretended a football was a turd that came out of his behind. We have seen Robert Ayers do a silly sack dance with his team down 28-7. Thank you, NFL, for allowing players to continue to go down this route.sheajets wrote:Regarding TD dance rules, of course the limits of this will be pushed and soon with over the top and grotesque displays. I like tie games for the variety they bring to the standings so I'm all for the shortening of the OT period. Other than that, I hate everything.
