So I don't know why I get to wondering about random things like this. There has been huge lack of great players who have worn the #6. As in none! According to the PFHOF website, Ray Flaherty and Benny Friedman for a season or two I guess. So I pose the question... Who is the greatest #6 ever? (who wore it for the majority of his career.) Is it...... dare I say..... Jay Cutler?

...but he wasn't very good.
Boy, the pickins' are really slim. I think it has to be Cutler with Bubby the next best position player. John James was a good punter and there's been some decent kickers.

Marc Wilson (also 2 SB "wins") is at least as good as Bubby Brister.

The first player who crossed my mind was Falcons and Oilers punter John James (1972-1984). He went to three straight Pro Bowls while playing for Atlanta. He had a dubious record, though: 4 times he led the league in punts and punting yards (he is 14th all-time and 19th in punting yards).
Another possibility is Chargers kicker Rolf Benirschke (1977-1986). He went to the Pro Bowl after the 1982 season and a year later was the NFL Man of the Year.
As for Super Bowl Champion, Kevin Butler (in his rookie year) was a part of the 1985 Chicago Bears. He is 36th all-time in field goals.

The best player(s) that wore #6 would likely be in the 1920's/circa that era. Of course you can find players who played five seasons and wore five different #'s so it wasn't like it is now. But Tony Latone wore #6 and I believe wore it during the famed 1925 Pottsville season. Guys like Cy Wentworth, Mule Wilson, Hust Stockton, etc., wore #6. It wasn't the most popular # but it was a # that good players wore. Sure there's more good players from those days that got handed #6 for a game or for a year.
When it became more standard to have "your" number I suppose there's Warren McVea, at least that's a #6 I thought of immediately. Otherwise it's a collection of K's and P's with the occasional QB - which of course Cutler would be the most known #6 of the group.
