Bobby Boyd
I was looking at the list of NFL Interception leaders and Boyd's was the first name I came across with whom I was not familiar.
A two time pro bowler, 3 time all pro and on the team of the decade for the 60's Boyd played for the Colts from 1960-68 and led the NFL in interceptions in '65 with 9. He had 57 career picks.
It kind of surprises me I don't remember more about Boyd... I guess he was just before my memories of the game really begin (although I remember seeing many of the Colts/Packers/Rams of the 60's...).
Anyway, I read up on him a bit and wanted to know more than just the bare bones.
Please, tell me more about this very good (Very Good?) player...

Re: Bobby Boyd
I put him on the list of 10 I submitted for the HoVG after I looked up his career achievements.
Re: Bobby Boyd
Many years ago when i saw him as part of a GOTW -and combined with having seen him on the int list and things I have read- I thought he seemed good.
Years later when I got some GOTW's, full game and eventually more various film he was good and became a player I liked to talk up.
I've nominated him for the HOVG in the past (believe it was the 2013 cycle) and vote for him basically every year.
He was one of the first players Ken and I went over a couple years back: http://kencrippen.com/Scouting-Reports/Boyd_Bobby.pdf

Re: Bobby Boyd
Boyd has a great INT/games played ratio. He was a QB in college at Oklahoma under Bud Wilkinson (they didn't pass all that much), but he also played DB at Oklahoma as well. I'm not sure if Boyd's success with the Colts influenced the team to try to make DBs out of Jack Mildren and Rex Kern.
From what I've read, Boyd was very smart and physical but not very fast. He fit in well with the Colts because they were a heavy zone defense team, and Boyd typically was responsible for the short zone on his side of the field. This might be a bad comparison, but I would liken Boyd to Ronde Barber. I'm not sure if Boyd would have lasted as a man-to-man CB, but he was exceptional at what he was asked to do.
I think the 1964 season sums up Boyd's career. He had a great regular season (as did the Colts) with 9 INTs for 185 yards and consensus 1st team All-Pro honors. In the NFL championship game, the Colts were deathly afraid of a Browns rookie WR named Paul Warfield, so they rotated their zone to Warfield's side. This left Boyd with deep responsibility against Gary Collins, which resulted in Collins having 5-130-3 TDs, 2 of which were 40+ yard TDs.

Bobby Boyd (4/2/60s) strikes me as approaching borderline and wouldn't be the my first priority as a Senior HoF CB snub -- would rank Lemar Parrish, Dave Grayson, and maybe Abe Woodson ahead of him -- but I can see a case for him and would likely vote in his favor if given the opportunity.
Kind of cool how young he went bald, though.

I "discovered" him in much the same way... and was one of my HOVG nominees this past year. Looks like Super Bowl III would have been his last game. Does anyone know how he performed in that game? ........aha. I see there's a game review in Ken's scouting report.I was looking at the list of NFL Interception leaders and Boyd's was the first name I came across with whom I was not familiar.

Re: Bobby Boyd
The consensus was both Boyd and Lenny Lyles didn't do well. Lyles had trouble with George Sauer and Maynard (playing with a bad hamstring) beat Boyd deep early in the game but Namath overthrew him.ChrisBabcock wrote:I "discovered" him in much the same way... and was one of my HOVG nominees this past year.
