Chiefs vs Jets 1971

In this game KC Chief Warren McVea get hurt by Jet play Eric Thomas.

Besides grabbing the face mask I don't get how McVea got so hurt badly.

Mike, at what point in this 92 minute video is McVea injured? I do remember McVea had a serious knee injury which reduced his effectiveness, don't know if it occurred on the play you mentioned.
