Arguably the most impressive of these late 80s-early 90s teams that teased flashes of greatness, but usually flopped in the playoffs.
Both were 11-5 in 1991, Houston predominantly on offense, Saints via defense.
Who was the better of these specific teams from this year?
1991 Oilers vs. 1991 Saints

I would have to give the edge to the Oilers, especially if Steve Walsh was playing QB for the Saints. Don't know why they gave Dallas a first for him.

It wasn't such a bad trade when they made it. Walsh had been a very good quality college QB, then wasn't terrible as Aikman's backup on that dreadful Cowboys team. The Saints were in a bit of a pickle in 1990 given that Bobby Hebert was holding out, and, I think, suing them. They made nice in 1991, but then he got injured halfway through the season and that was pretty much it for them.7DnBrnc53 wrote:I would have to give the edge to the Oilers, especially if Steve Walsh was playing QB for the Saints. I agree that the Oilers were the better team. If nothing else, they were certainly more exciting.

Going by body-of-work, you have Houston winning against five playoff teams in regular season - yes, one of them vs Coz's 8-8 Jets (arguably worst playoff team ever). Saints in the regular season won against four playoff teams - five if you want to count SF (arguably best non-playoff team in post-merger era). I'll count it. Both were 3-1 vs common opponents; each beating KC & Raiders, Houston beating Dallas who beat Saints, Saints beating Eagles who beat Houston. What easily breaks the 'tie-breaker' for me is Houston's utter walloping of Denver & Raiders, and giving Wash all they could handle at RFK. Yes, at least winning a playoff game (albeit 17-10 at home to...Coz's 8-8 Jets) another additive. And let's add Moon over Hebert; or especially Walsh!
Yes, it was at Mile High, but still can't get how they let Denver eliminate them. Pardee a good coach but simply could never get past them darn divisionals.
'91 Oilers, '91 Saints...a pair of teams each starting 9-2 but failing to make their respective CC. Great idea/twosome for a 'comparison' thread.

Wow!
Wasn't aware that '91 was the first time ever that Saints started out 2-0!
