The Bengals were in the SB in 1988, and made the playoffs in 1990 (I even picked them to win the Central in 91). What happened to them after that? Why did they go to the dogs until the Marvin Lewis era?

For starters, Paul Brown died in 1991, and after that season, Mike Brown fired Sam Wyche--while trying to claim that he quit so that he wouldn't have to pay off the rest of his contract.

Hanging onto a certain HC for 4.5 seasons (5-11, 3-13, 3-13, 7-9, 1-6) because of his last name clearly didn't help.
