The way I understand it, if the Jets lose tomorrow and the Steelers win, then both teams will have the same record and the Steelers will be a wild card team in the playoffs instead of the Jets. Pittsburgh will have the tiebreaker in their favor.

So, what would be the tiebreaker?

I think that both teams would have the same record in the conference and they didn't play each other during the season, so no head to head. The only thing I can think of is record vs. common opponents.

Anyone know?

1. Head-to-head (best won-lost-tied percentage in games between the clubs).
2. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the division.
3. Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games.
4. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference.
5. Strength of victory.
6. Strength of schedule.
7. Best combined ranking among conference teams in points scored and points allowed.
8. Best combined ranking among all teams in points scored and points allowed.
9. Best net points in common games.
10. Best net points in all games.
11. Best net touchdowns in all games.
12. Coin toss

Ties in the wild-card race

The wild card could present some wild scenarios with four teams with similar records battling for only two spots. If there is a tie involving only two teams, it will be decided as follows:

1. Head-to-head, if applicable.
2. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference.
3. Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games, minimum of four.
4. Strength of victory.
5. Strength of schedule.
6. Best combined ranking among conference teams in points scored and points allowed.
7. Best combined ranking among all teams in points scored and points allowed.
8. Best net points in conference games.
9. Best net points in all games.
10. Best net touchdowns in all games.
11. Coin toss.

Thanks for the info. I believe it is common opponents. If the Jets lose to Buffalo and Pittsburgh beats Cleveland, then they will be tied and Pittsburgh will be 4 and 1 against common opponents and the Jets will be 3 and 2 against common opponents.

So, the Jets must beat Buffalo to get in as WC. That may not be so easy because the head coach of Buffalo is Rex Ryan, who was fired by the Jets after last season. So, he probably will have the Bills up for the Jets. Also, the game will be played in Buffalo.

They showed Rex at a press conference (I assume it was this week in regards to the upcoming finale) saying how he and his team should be fired up no matter what - not just for pride, not just 'cause it's against the Jets, etc. He said (likely I'm paraphrasing), "I don't care if we're playing East Carolina..." It cracked me up for he was borrowing a line from his father back in '89 when (referring to Jimmy Johnson) he said that there were no 'East Carolinas' in the NFL.

Yes, like I stated in the Todd Bowles thread, Rex playing for pride at home vs his old team just won't seem to be enough. I could be wrong. I hope.
