QB Slide Rule

Post by JohnH19 »

Raise your hand if you feel like the QB slide rule puts them in more danger than if they just played football like other players. Whether the hit by the defender on Teddy B. today was dirty or not is a moot point. The fact of the matter is that he was totally defenseless and these types of plays happen time and time again; sometimes with intent to injure but more often because the defender is committed to making contact and can't stop. The defender is often unjustly penalized in these situations. It's one of many terrible rules in today's game.

Reminded me of that Steve Pelleur hit in 1988, I believe. But to answer the question I don't think it helps quarterbacks much more than nothing at all.

Rob Johnson was sliding against the Jets in 2001 when Mo Lewis came up from behind and hit the back of Johnson's head with a forearm. I was at that game and couldn't believe that there was no flag. Johnson's knees had actually made contact with the ground when Lewis hit him. It was a sort of awkward slide where Johnson's head and upper body were still upright.

The sliding hit on Bridgewater never would have happened had the Rams been successful on their attempt to blow out Bridgewater's knee a couple plays earlier. LaMarcus Joyner is actually the victim here...if William Hayes had done his job Joyner never would have been compelled to lauch his shoulder into Bridgewater's face.

Anyone notice the irony of Rodney Harrison complaining how Fisher's team took out his knee (while Fisher *supposedly* laughed) when it was his controversial low blow in a preseason game that blew out Trent Green's knee?

Harrison complained about being injured against the Titans when he tried to injure a player on the previous play? What nerve.

No, sorry, I poorly stated that. In essence what I was saying was that Harrison lived on the slippery slope between aggressive and dirty, even blowing out Trent Green's knee in a preseason game once. But then last night on NBC he told Tony Dungy that Fisher once chuckled when one of his Titans injured him.

Just seemed like kind of a pot/kettle thing.

Quarterbacks Frank Ryan of Cleveland and Charley Johnson of St. Louis were both skilled in the use of the slide rule. By the end of the 1970s, however, the electronic calculator made the slide rule obsolete.

Damnit Mark, you beat me to it. I was just going to make the exact same joke, but my examples were going to be Frank Ryan and Virgil Carter.

Maybe it's time to bring back the "Slide Rule" Bowl for nostalgia's sake.
