He took over two awful teams and, in a sort-of Parcells way, immediately lead them to the playoffs the very next (full) season albeit both being strike years and never again making playoffs with either club although almost making it a few times right after each campaign each team. Teams were quite respectable at least. Had he been able to go at it longer in the NFL and with the right (at the time) franchise, could he have been more successful? Thoughts?

He had the sleaze factor attached to him, given that he arrived in New England from SMU. I suppose some teams wouldn't care, but I'm guessing that most teams figured that he had too much baggage. After all, the only owner to hire him after New England was Robert Irsay.

I heard that comment and Meyer also saying that Eason was "just another guy", but Eason was the best thing that happened to Meyer. In 1982 and 1983, Meyer's Patriots have one of the worst passing offenses in the league. Meyer makes Eason the regular starter in 1984, and Eason responds with a season of 23 TDs vs. 8 INTs, 60.1%, 3228 yards, 93.8 rating. Pretty good numbers for QB who was Steve Grogan's backup and in his second year. Eason had a chronic shoulder problem in 1985, which might have contributed to Meyer's dismissal, but i don't know why Meyer was so down on Eason. He was easily the best QB Meyer ever had.

I think that Meyer was dismissed because he fired Rod Rust, and the owners didn't want that to happen, so Rust was retained, Meyer was fired, and Raymond Berry was brought in.

I think just about anybody who watched the Patriots during those years would take Grogan over Eason. Eason mostly threw safe passes to his backs and tight ends. He had one of the great deep threats in the NFL and Stanley Morgan but couldn't get the ball to him.

Eason's arm strength was considered one of his drawbacks coming in to the Draft.

When Eason got hurt in week 6 against Buffalo, Steve Grogan took over, and the Pats reeled off six straight wins before Grogan got hurt in an overtime loss to the Jets in Week 12. The Pats won three of their last four with Eason to reach the playoffs, and won three on the road to reach the SB, but the running game was more of a factor than Eason. They had a few games (like the Cincy game in Week 16 and the AFC Championship Game against Miami) were they ran for over 200 yards.
