Coy Bacon is said to have had 26 sacks in 1976 according to the Bengals team highlight film. As a team, the Bengals had a relatively high 46 sacks, but they weren't really close to the league-leading Niners Gold Rush (61 sacks) or even the Colts Sack Pack (56 sacks). I had heard of Bacon's 26 sack season, but for some reason I always thought it allegedly took place while he was on the Rams, and was then 'downgraded' to something like 21 sacks because the Rams counted half sacks as full sacks. Did Bacon actually have two huge sack seasons? How many sacks did he have in 1976?

It was 22.5, not 26, the 26 counted assisted sacks as 1 as opposed to .5.

Bacon was an excellent pass rusher, but never approached that level again. He was very inconsistent through his career and really played best when motivated. He essentially quit on the Redskins in 1981 because Gibbs actually thought veterans should practice.

Thanks. 22.5 is still very impressive, especially considering Bacon's age. He was bascially half of the Bengal sack total by himself.

That Gibbs was nothing but a trouble maker. Whatever became of him and his hair brain ideas?
