Allegedly, Ron Wolf was having problems with Sterling Sharpe, and was thinking about getting rid of him at the end of the 94 season if he stayed healthy, according to the people that do this podcast:

That was the same off-season that they traded Mark Brunell to the Jaguars after the Eagles couldn't get a contract worked out with him (he wanted a shorter deal, and before they could get it worked out, Jacksonville beat them to the punch).

I wonder what the Packers could have gotten in return in a trade that included both Sharpe and Brunell to one of those teams.

If Sharpe hadn't hurt his neck, it's hard to imagine them not keeping him. He was a huge pill during his holdout prior to the 1994 season, but as they say, winning fixes everything. Sharpe's 1994 wasn't quite up to the record-setting pace of his previous two seasons, but he still had 94 catches and 18 TDs -- and, at that point, he was the most potent weapon in their passing game by far.

After the season, Sharpe forced the team's hand by demanding they either give him a raise or release him. Given the tenuous (at best) possibility that he would ever play again, it was an easy choice. Once that happened he was pretty much persona non grata for other teams.

It's an interesting what-if, though, because if they could have packaged Brunell and a healthy Sharpe together, some team would have gotten a pretty promising QB-WR tandem.
