NFL Top 10 “Quarterback Teases”

Jim Everett and Steve Bartkowski were teases. Both had some good seasons but while Bartkowski succumb to knee injuries, Everett regressed. Its still hard to believe that Bartkowski could never lead his Falcons to consecutive winning seasons?

Joe Flacco should be on this list.

After winning the Super Bowl in 2013, Flacco signed a huge contract and the "experts" called him a Top 10, if not Top 5, QB. He had arguably the best postseason in history by a QB. Then, Flacco had just two winning seasons as a full-time starter who started most of his team's games after 2013.

Talk about a fall from grace.

Would calling Flacco after 2012 a a couple spots above the middle be fair (say 13th or 14th?)

Flacco did nothing significant after leaving the Ravens in 2018. He didn't ever make the Pro Bowl until a year or two ago. He was at the top of the mountain after winning the SB... and folks may have thought he was there to stay. Then it all went downhill. Is that not a tease?

His career after that Super Bowl is definitely a tease, but would it be fair to call Flacco after that about league average?

The comments are true about Flacco ... but he was very successful when he won it all. After that, he seemed to regress, similar to Eli Manning and Troy Aikman. The Ravens running game was terrible and Flacco didnt have many weapons until Lamar Jackson joined the team his last year there. Having a big lead and the defense allowing Tom Brady to lead a comeback in the 2014/15 postseason didnt help as well. A Ravens-Seahawks SB would have been interesting, since the Colts were manhandled by NE, but the Ravens blew that playoff game and Flacco couldnt get the swagger back.

After his SB win in early 2013, Flacco had exactly three receivers and ONE RB who achieved a 1000 yrd plus season from 2013 - 2018 in Baltimore.

2014 -- WR Steve Smith Sr
-- RB Justin Forsett
2015 -- WR Mike Wallace

Imagine had he retained Ray Rice at RB, Torrey Smith at receiver, and a younger Steve Smith Sr? Torrey Smith and his speed left after the 2014/15 playoff loss. Yes, with his talent and one championship, he was a tease, but also, his first seven seasons as starter he had NO losing seasons and has a career 117 - 100 career record as starter ... not bad at all.

Aikman regressed because he only trusted receivers that worked hard on staying on the same page as he did. Irvin, Martin and Novachek were really the only receivers he truly trusted, though he could get the ball to Harper and Ismail. By the time Galloway joined the team, Aikman was having concussion issues, though he claimed he could still play. After retirement, he stated that he couldnt adapt to different players joining the team and felt they didnt have the same work ethic and simply retired out of frustration. We all know concussions did him in

Aikman liked to utilize tall tight ends but LaFleur and Bjorgson were disappointing and once Novachek had left, he lost his true security blanket.

Whats interesting is that Randall Cunningham could have succeeded Aikman, but rather than letting him develop with Joey Galloway, the team moved on to Quincy Carter instead. HC Dave Campo would be fired soon after.

I don't know that I'd categorize him as "fool's gold" (or old gold, black and white) but Archie Manning never lived up to expectations.
Of course, that was hardly his fault, what with the team(s) he was on but there was so much unrealized potential there...

Bum Phillips should have committed to him when he went there in 1981. Instead, he eventually traded him for a washed-up Ken Stabler (and then traded for Richard Todd in 1984).

Not committing to Archie and keeping Wes Chandler turned out to be mistakes, and it may have cost him a playoff spot.

I heard that the loss in the 1983 season finale crushed him, and it led to his 1985 retirement. It may not have happened if he kept Archie and Wes.
