Tasker, White Shoes, Mitchell — they're there for their special teams play.

Special teams isn't a "position". Tasker should be listed as a wide receiver, which is what he was.

My guess is different makeup of the committee. They have not met in person yet, so it is tough to say unless the voters mention why they voted the way they did in the cutdown votes.

Thanks ... you would think with cutdowns being so important and players hanging in the balance that everyone would be meeting face-to-face, sharing information, improving communication, media urgency, etc ?

Do some of the voters hold stickum against Hayes?

That's a good q on if/who holds stickum against him. Lester had a few years were he committed an unreasonable amount of penalties.

And that's sort of the problem - I've charted ~20% of his career games and he really is very borderline. Is there another player ever who's reputation is so largely colored by a single monster season? And by '85 and '86 he's legitimately fat and really is a liability in coverage. AP1 - once (+DPOY), AP2 - once, PB - five times. Honestly, of DPOY winners he's up there as having the worst overall career.

DPOY winners who had better careers: Page, Greene, Blount, Lambert, Martin, Gradishar, Selmon, LT, Easley, Singletary, Reggie, Bruce, Swilling, Kennedy, Rod Woodson, Deion, Sapp, Ray Lewis, Strahan, Derrick Brooks, Ed Reed, Urlacher, Jason Taylor, James Harrison, Charles Woodson, Polamalu, Suggs, JJ, Kuechley, Mack, Donald, TJ, Nick Bosa, Myles Garrett

DPOY Winners who were similar: Dick Anderson, Keith Millard, Bryce Paup, Dana Stubblfield, Bob Sanders, Stephon Gilmore

DPOY winners with worse careers: Doug Betters??

Too recent to rate: Surtain II

And all that said - he was a VERY fun player to watch just because he was so different.

I always thought that in 1980 the desxerving DPOY was Lester's teammate Ted Hendricks. I remember that the previous year many considered Hendricks washed up, but he had a monster year, being all over the field, guiding the Raiders to Super Bowl XV victory.
