I knew he had been injured and out for the season but didn't recall (46 years ago) what the exact injury was. Anyway, Sonny Jurgensen wasn't available the rest of the 1972 season, Super Bowl VII especially.

This is from a CC article by Don Smith:

At the finish of one of their championship seasons, the Packers went to Hollywood to make a movie short. One sequence called for Herber to throw the ball from the 50-yard line and break a three-foot-square pane of glass which has been suspended from the crossbar between the goal posts. Arnie took a few warmup tosses and then, on his first attempt, hit the bulls-eye. But the director had failed to get the cameras rolling. He told Arnie he would have to do it again. Calmly on his very next toss, Herber duplicated the feat.

I've actually seen the video - its pretty cool.

Also, when Aaron Rodgers came into the league, I remember watching highlights of him and thinking his form looked really textbook. And no, I'm not a Packers fan at all, just thought of those two who hadn't been mentioned. Marino kind of reminded me of a baseball catcher who is good at throwing out baserunners - it actually saves time not to use a pretty motion.

From a personal perspective, I'm guilty of using the term. In looking at the QB position for the 5 seasons '15 to '19, I used a criteria that put Milt Ghee at the top. I was fine with the result, but still felt the need to call out to the reader what type of player Ghee was. He did a little bit of everything - was noted for defense, punt and kick returns, making interceptions, etc. I felt like that was a bit in contrast to players like Gus Dorais and Al Mahrt who made their names by throwing the football. Given my research on Mahrt, it always puzzled me why he wasn't recruited by other teams, but in the case of Dorais, I had the sense he was hired for one reason - to throw TD passes. Even when Hammond pilfered Ghee from Canton, I don't think it was because they expected him to light up the sky with passes. By '20, Ghee was with Chicago and selected 3rd team All-Pro, but its likely his passing numbers weren't close to Mahrt who was documented with at least 591 yards. As to why I used the term, I guess I'd read it enough that it just came out naturally when writing.
