The World Football League made the two point conversion mandatory, IIRC

Actually, what they had was a variation called the "action point", where the touchdown was worth 7 points rather than 6, and an extra point could be scored either by running or passing the ball to the end zone. Similar concept to getting 8 points out of a TD and a conversion attempt, but there was no choice of whether to kick for 1 or run/pass for 2, because conversions in the WFL could not be kicked.

Never liked it. Still don't but have gotten used to it.

Though I don't mind the defense being able to score 2 on that play either. Basically two points are up for grabs on the play and both teams can claim them by doing several things

I believe the NFL thought they'd have more coaches going for 2 trying to get creative and surprise the other team and doing it in attempt to steal a point. But that almost never happens

Also I feel as though it cheapens comebacks and unfairly punishes teams that have played well most of the game. If you're holding a 16 point lead later in the game you shouldn't be able to lose that on just two possessions

And the play itself is so hard to defend especially in todays all offense league. It takes place from the 2 when it really should be from the 5

I agree with you entirely.

Chiefs/Oilers 1993 playoffs

After KC went up 21-13, Houston got a touchdown but had to kick the XP instead of a chance to tie the game at 21-21

If they tied it…… who knows?

The argument against the 2 point conversion when it was legalized in 1958 for college football was this. Suppose a team dominates a game and leads 7-0. 10-3 or 14-7. The team trailing scores a lucky touchdown and wins with a 2 point conversion.

1983 Cowboys-Redskins Week 1. Washington trailed 31-23 and scored a last-second touchdown which turned out to be meaningless. Mark Moseley, 1982 MVP, earlier missed and it came back to haunt the 'Skins. Of course, that game is better known as the game Howard Cosell said something bad.

Had John Unitas gotten the Colts into the endzone at the 3:19 mark and had the chance to try for two points, instead of the game-chosen extra point, Super III might have had a finish for the ages ... IF they convert ...

1990 Broncos at Bills (when Buffalo famously scored 3 touchdowns in 77 seconds)

At 29-21, Denver got a late touchdown.

If there was a 2PC, either they miss and we still get that onside kick attempt

But if Denver tied it……. Considering how important that game was for Buffalo would they have been able to win?

Heck if Denver wins maybe Buffalo never realizes their potential and Miami or the Raiders are the AFC team in SB XXV

I have no issue with the 2pt conversion but honestly I didnt think the game really needed it in 1993 either. Certainly makes for some incredible comebacks that perhaps wouldn't have happened before (though that doesnt mean the right...or deserving team would've won) it adds a
