I was ten that year and have vague memories of that show. Okay, 'Beach Bums' was 'conveniently' (pre-remote-control) on the same channel (ABC) as Monday Night Football, but just one problem...'Little House on the Prairie' was on NBC during that time (yes, 'Bums' was apparently no MacGyver a decade later)! I'd like to think if I was more of-age Autumn '77, I'd simply have no problem watching that very show that took place in Walnut Grove and then at 9PM EST, simply getting my ass off the couch (not a hard chore, right?) to turn the channel three knobs right to then get my ass back on the couch to watch my Steelers induct DeBartolo into the League opening Monday Night, 27-0 (and then every MN after that)!
"Football, you bet!" was, apparently, the big but real fleeting (VERY soon to be forgotten forever and ever) saying at the time during that Sept-Dec '77 period. A sub-"Where's the Beef"-like term from that easily forgotten show. Simply watching the theme-song, and the ABC promos, makes me remember how - despite some real good stuff being on TV at the time - there was a lot of trash as well. That very theme-song of 'Beach Bums' reminds me of just how many very bad, some-formulaic/forgettable crap was on TV at that very time! I'm usually pretty good at seeing a trailer and being able to tell if it is good or not and I see nothing of this show via youtube that exactly piques any interest in me at all! Even though the actor (Stuart Pankin) who played (the 'nerd') in my favorite high-school-themed movie ever ('The Hollywood Knights') is in it. Nor despite they (desperately) getting the cast of 'Charlie's Angels' to appear, as themselves, in the pilot ep or they getting NFL-ers (Rossovich amongst them, also Frank Gifford, and 'Karate-Kid' villain Martin Kove on it too) in another ep as well as Arnold Schwarzenegger being in the last (10th) aired episode (Ep 11 never aired at all).
Not much is really offered about this show online which has to say SO MUCH! Not even a full ep (from someone who may have recorded it beta at the time) is even available on youtube. It just simply wreaks of "forget about it"! What's a worse TV series? The super-weak 'White Shadow'-precursor that Namath starred in after he retired, or the two other 'Animal House'-inspired frat-house shows (on the two other networks) that competed with the also-weak 'Delta House'? Again, plenty of real bad TV in the late-'70s despite plenty of great classic stuff along with it!
As for Rossovich himself...didn't really know about him, but upon reading that he played for those struggling Eagles of the late-'60s/early-'70s (guess he and Ditka were teammates) I do remember an NFL Films piece of the Eagles playing at Franklin Field that very time and remember they showing someone in a mustache on the sideline being real outspoken. I'm thinking that may have been him. He seemed like quite a character. He and Selleck roommates at USC. How is it the coincidence of future-celebs being roommates while they're in college? Like Tommy Lee Jones and Al Gore being roomies while at Harvard during that 29-29...'loss' of theirs?
Fralic was good enough at Pitt that some people were delusional enough to think he could win the Heisman.
