One of my all-time favorite NFL QB's. I never saw him with the Cardinals or Oilers but I do remember his years in Denver (1972-1975). His 1972 performance in a Week 6 win at Oakland still stands out. He was All-AFC in 1973 and took the Broncos to the brink of the AFC West title that season. R.I.P. #12.

I remember Charley Johnson with the Cardinals. He had two big years 1963-64 throwing for over 3000 yards. If the Browns hadn't managed a tie with the Cardinals in Week Two, Johnson and the Cardinals would probably have been in the 1964 NFL Championship game against the Colts, which would have been a home game for the Cardinals.

Charley Johnson had injury problems in 1965-66, then was in the Army during 1967-68. How many well-known players of that time got called up to active duty? It took him until 1972-73 with Denver to regain his career momentum.

Johnson was a QB to root for the Cardinals in the 1960s. I only saw him on film but he could be a streaky passer who could light up a scoreboard when he was hot. In a shootout against the Saints in 1969, Johnson threw 6 TD passes in a loss.

The Cardinals started hot in 1966 but an injury to Johnson took them out of the divisional race. The Oilers took a chance on him but he got injured quickly and later helped the Broncos secure their first winning seasons.
Many people never realized that he had a winning record as a starter over his career.

RIP

Another football legend dies on 9/11.

JohnnyU did as well. Joe will now stare across from him in Agape.

RIP

Some people felt he was better than Butkus or Lanier at MLB. Also one of the Lions best coaches.
