Brian wolf wrote: Tue Jul 28, 2026 11:55 am Youre right Bob ... I just think its interesting that the Bears emphatically showed what the forward pass could do. Even before the Browns, who might have had the best team of the decade with that undefeated 1948 team. Imagine had the Bears had Kavanaugh that year? Luckman might have had over 30 TD passes in 10 games!
Considering that Luckman threw five TDs in the '43 title game, he had 33 touchdown passes in just 11 games! Remarkable.

I also found a possible missing TD for him that year, and then decided that no, we didn't have enough proof to try to add it. But you'll enjoy this:

1990s -- 1993 Cowboys -- too much defensive speed
Playing against a worn down Bills team in the Super Bowl will make you look fast.
I honestly think the 92 Bills were better than 93

Good article, and good work tracking down the explanation.

20's- 1929 Packers, undefeated and beat the top teams, close runner up for me would be 27 Giants that allowed only 20 points all year but they lost a game and didn't play 2nd place Green Bay that year.

30's- 1938 NY Giants, only allowed 79 total points all year, runners up would be 34 Bears who without the Sneakers ordeal would have a solid claim for being greatest team in all of NFL history.

40's- 1949 Philadelphia Eagles, 11-1 record in a season where the league was the healthiest and most competitive in the decade after WWII, Steve Van Buren.

50's- 1950 Cleveland Browns to me seem like the prime of the team coming over from AAFC going 10-2 and winning the NFL title in their first season.

60's- 1962 Packers, one of the best teams in NFL history at the height of their powers imo

70's- 1972 Dolphins, I'm not a fan of trying to discredit their undefeated run, the road playoff win over Pittsburgh and Shula overcoming the pressures of his previous choke jobs to win the big one finally clinches their run for being legitimately great for me.

80's- 1989 49ers, to me this was the super team and best 49er squad with Rice it's hard for me to imagine any team ever beating the 89 49ers head to head when comparing champions to champions in head to head matchups of who would win, I do feel like this was the best team in NFL history.

90's- 1991 Washington Redskins, seems to be a controversial opinion but I just feel like they had a better season than any others, they didn't get dominated in any way like the 96 Packers did against Dallas that season or like how the 94 49ers did by Philly, didn't have the blunder loss like the Leon Lett game that Dallas had in 93, won more games than either 92/93 Cowboys teams, played tougher Super Bowl opponent in prime Bills squad that was favored to beat them, played tougher schedule than 99 Rams, only teams I would put on their level are 98 Broncos and 90 Giants but still feel like they had more impressive season than they did.

00's- 2004 Patriots the team that got it done

10's- 2013 Seahawks

Good takes Shinobi ... I had thought about the 49' Eagles myself, especially after beating the Rams but considering they lost both meetings to Cleveland in 1950, those 1948-1949 Browns cant be discredited. Tough calls with the 47' Cardinals beating the Bears and Eagles for their last championship.

For the 60's, the 1962 Packers make the most sense. For the 70's, I would say the 1976 Steelers (perhaps the best team ever). For the 1980's, I would say the 1985 Bears are the best. In the 1990's, the 1998 Broncos were the best. In the 00's, there weren't many all-time great teams. I won't pick the Patriot teams because they cheated. In the 2010's, the 2013 Seahawks are the best.

We aren’t done with the decade, but how about 2020’s so far?

Also, for the 1976 Steelers if they had no injuries then they could’ve gone down as the greatest team ever. That said as is, I think 75 is a dark horse case.

Today's NFL is a terrible product.

So this decade hasn’t had a great team in your book then?

Not sure if I would say it’s one of the very best, but the 2024 Eagles would probably get my vote
