I totally forgot about the Eagles being 0-12 at the time. Which made the whole thing even worse for both teams---the Lions get embarrassed by a winless team on national TV and the Eagles blow their shot at getting OJ. Win, win! Or actually, lose, lose.John Maxymuk wrote: ↑Sat Sep 20, 2025 2:16 pm Growing up in the Philadelphia area, I remember watching this slop fest in Joe Kuharich's last season. Joe must go was the watchword. Going into the game, the Eagles were the only winless team in pro football and headed the field in the race for the bottom to snag OJ Simpson with the top pick of the 69 draft. Alas, they not only screwed up in reverse by beating Detroit but then blew it entirely a week later by beating the Saints. Buffalo sunk to the bottom at 1-12-1, while the Eagles tied with Atlanta at 2-12. SImpson went to Buffalo, George Kunz to Atlanta, Leroy Keyes to Philly and Joe Greene to the 2-11-1 Steelers. Keyes was the one on-field disappointment amongst the four.

Not only that, Vince Lombardi was rumored to be going to Philadelphia to take over the Eagles. They missed out on both OJ and Lombardi.
