At one time there was a restriction against adding a player to the team too late for the playoffs. This is why Ed Brown was not able to play for the Colts in the 1965 playoff against the Packers, the somewhat dubious contrivance of his acquisition notwithstanding. These transactions go all the way back to 1946 at least, but others activated already were part of the organizations in question. By 1983, that no longer seemed to be an issue, since the Rams signed Mike McDonald as a long snapper off the street.

I was wondering if the retired list still exists and Weddle was on it for the Rams since he retired from them. It doesn't seem as if it mattered for McDonald, so I'm not sure it would have mattered for Weddle, though if Weddle was still getting comped by some other organization it may have been more difficult. McDonald had no prior ties to anyone.

Wow, 68, how does one find this list----would be great to see. I thought it was 16 based on a Tweet....

I queried Pro Football Reference using Stathead. If you query for players who played 0 games in a season, you get the list. PFR does not track players who were active but DNP for a season, so that list is the playoff only players.

They may be missing some, I know Dave Morrison of the 1968 Raiders was missing. Why I said at least 68.

I was about to say you missed Marshawn Lynch but he was signed for the last game of the regular season now that I think about it.

My query from PFR was apparently only for players who didn't play for ANY team during the regular season in question. Tod's list includes players who played in the regular season for one (or more) teams, then in the post season for a different team without playing any regular season games for that team. I ran some additional queries by team, but PFR does not seem to list all of these. This particular trend has proliferated in recent years, see Damion Squire, the first NFL player to play for two different teams in the same post season.

I did find some additional names that Tod can add to his list:
Lenny Simonetti, 1946 Browns
Bud McFadin, 1952 Rams
Henry Stuckey, 1972 Dolphins
Fred Dean, 1977 Bears
Willie Teal, 1980 Vikings
Chris Williams, 1981 Bills
Dee Hardison, 1981 Giants
Angelo Fields, 1982 Packers
Anthony Spears, 1989 Oilers
Mike Sherrard, 1989 49ers
Rich Gannon, 1989 Vikings
Bubba Paris, 1991 Lions
Lindsay Knapp, 1993 Chiefs
Jay Fiedler, 1995 Eagles
Mike Flores, 1995 49ers
George Hegamin, 1995 Cowboys
Craig Osika, 2002 49ers
Kaleb Johnson, 2015 Ravens

Thank you for the additions to my list.

I have Simonetti and McFadin each playing in 1 regular season game.
Osika was inactive for both 49er playoff games on 2002
Kaleb Johnson was cut by Baltimore in midseason, then assigned on waivers to the Browns where he remained the rest of the season. The Browns did not make the playoffs that year.

What about players who were inactive during the season, activated in the postseason, but still didn't see action...like 1976 Bob Berry?
