It really should have been 7. Not sure why Payton took Kamara out, only to reinsert him later in the game.

I think some of the offensive numbers from the elite players have been inflated this year due to so many teams not being at full strength. Defensive secondaries have been forced to call up practice squad players and have them start. Aaron Rodgers is a good QB who has played well, but his numbers (especially his TD-INT rate) are otherworldly this season. Its like when Sid Luckman had a huge year during WWII...this 2020 season is similar to that era of the NFL, IMO. Or maybe the last week of 1987 replacement football, when you had some of the regular players back and guys like Brian Brennan were putting up 250 receiving yards against subpar DBs.
Rodgers is thriving due to the Rodgers-LaFleur relationship. LeFleur is a lot better at scheming to get players open than McCarthy was, and Rodgers has bought into the new system. It is a credit to both of them. The Rodgers-McCarthy relationship was stale and not evolving, but it wasn't going to end while the team was still winning.

If Kamara (or anybody, for that matter) had scored #6 and had an opportunity to go for a 7th, I could see Payton (or just about any other coach) giving his guy every chance to get it. Normally you'd just go into the victory formation, but how often is something like this gonna happen? And from the opposing team's perspective, I don't consider it piling on or running up the score. Hey, it's the defense's job to stop the other team. That's what they're getting paid to do.

So what is the thinking here? He had no clue Kamara was close to the record when he let Hill score and then he let Kamara score just after the two minute warning because at that point he got word of the record? I guess that is the consensus. It seems to be that based on what I saw elsewhere on the internet. Payton has been painted as an idiot for this.

I bet the Saints coaching staff was unaware of the record. Kamara came out of the game at one point probably due to play design. I don't think he was on the sideline due to needing a breather. Then it just so happened that Hill did not get stopped and he scored a touchdown. Maybe a few minutes later in game time, word reached Payton. Then maybe he decided he had to try to get Kamara to tie the record. I do not believe Payton did anything wrong. There is no way he has single game records in a box somewhere on his laminated play sheet.

I dislike this now and I know I'll dislike it again. I know in 2031 I'll see something online from some random guy about how Payton was an idiot for not letting Kamara score 7 touchdowns.

I don't believe coaches should base their decisions on whether or not a player has a chance to set a record.
